SUBJECT: “How To Ride” Videos Encourage New Riders to Try the Bus
February 5, 2007 (Detroit) The fear of the unknown has often been cited as one reason many people won’t try public transportation. With that in mind, SMART has produced a series of “How to Ride the Bus” videos that are available on the transit agency’s website at www.smartbus.org.
“We produced a series of short videos that explain in detail everything you need to know to ride the bus,” explains SMART Public Relations Manager Mary Ann Mohring. “We understand that there is some hesitation that prevents a lot of people from taking the bus to work or to school. These videos put that fear to rest for those people who just aren’t sure.” Customers can go to www.smartbus.org and click on the link How to ride smart for short demonstrations on How to Ride Fixed Route, How to use the Farebox, How to use the Wheelchair Ramp or Lift and How to Use the Bike Rack.
“Once people try it the first time, they’re usually hooked,” said Mohring. “You discover how easy and convenient it is to ride the bus and how much money you can save. You can’t believe you’ve waited so long to get on board.”
SMART collaborated with Burke Video in Troy, Michigan to write, edit and shoot the demonstrations. Burke Video also produces the Disabilities Today program for PBS. The videos will also be used as Public Service Announcements for local cable television stations.
“SMART’s intent is to make things as easy and efficient as possible for our customers,” explains SMART General Manager, Dan Dirks. “Offering these videos online is just one more thing we can do to make riding the bus more inviting.”
