APPLICATION PROCESS

Step #1

Candidate completes application. (Applications may be obtained at the Main Office or at any of the three terminals). Please refer to FAQ’s.

Step #2

Human Resources conducts criminal background check on all applicants, as well as a driver’s license check if position requires.

Step #3

Bus Operators
In order to be considered for a Bus Operator position you must meet the initial criteria.

No suspended, revoked, or restricted drivers license within the past 60 months, or currently suspended and/or expired drivers license.

Five years driving a motor vehicle experience.

If all criteria are met, the application process is as follows. Please note that all correspondence is done by mail.

Test – Pre-employment Orientation test referred to as Public Relations Skills Test. Applicants will be notified by mail one to two weeks prior to test date. Please note there is no study material. This test cannot be rescheduled. Failure to appear will disqualify applicant from furthering in the pre-employment process. A score of 70% or better is required. Applicants scoring 70% or better will continue on to the interview process, which will be scheduled at a later date. Applicant with a score under 70% will receive a thank you letter within four (4) weeks. Please do not contact us regarding your test score, we are unable to provide that information. Telephone calls concerning test scores will not be accepted.

Interview – The interviews will be scheduled anywhere between one month and six months from the date of the Public Relations Skills Test. Applicant will have a two-week notice prior to the interview. Please do not call to change the date or time of your interview. Doing so may add up to another six months to the process for you. Please keep in mind that if you are scheduled for an interview this in no way guarantees you a position with SMART. Applicants that are interviewed will be notified by mail whether or not you have been accepted into the training program.

Training – The training program lasts seven weeks. Two weeks of classroom training and five weeks of on-the-road training at the terminal you will be placed at.

Pay Rate - The pay rate during the training period is $8.00 per hour if you do not have a CDL with the proper endorsements (BP for Fixed Route, CP for Connector bus). However, the pay rate is $8.50 if you have a CDL with the proper endorsements prior to starting training class. After successful completion of training the pay rate will increase in accordance with the collective bargaing agreements.

Coach Service Attendants
Entry level position in the Maintenance Department. Performs hostelling and servicing operations; cleans all coach interiors, seats, floors, windows and exteriors as required; keeps shop and yard areas clean and neat; and assists in automotive maintenance. Performs minor repairs not classed or skilled such as bulb changing; handles coach change-offs in road calls; and cleans part. Minimum requirements are as follows:

Valid Michigan Driver’s license

No suspended, revoked, or restricted drivers license within the past 60 months, or currently suspended and/or expired license.

Some experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance.

Physical strength and agility; physically and mentally capable of performing all the duties of the classification.

Mechanical knowledge, aptitude, initiative and resourcefulness; will be required to operate bus and maintain a valid commercial drivers license with the required endorsement and group designation based on the gross vehicle weight.

Other Positions
Persons meeting the criteria for position will be scheduled for an interview.
