American With Disabilities Act (ADA)
SMART provides ADA Paratransit service in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties for persons whose disability prevents them from using SMART’s regular fixed route bus service. This service is a requirement of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. ADA Paratransit service is designed to be comparable to the fixed route service.
ADA Service is an advance reservation service providing curb-to-curb transportation. The service covers the same areas, times and transfers as SMART fixed route service. ADA Service area is within 3/4 of a mile of a SMART regular fixed route. Individuals must be ADA certified to be eligible for this service.
SMART initiated the ADA Paratransit service in 1994, and provided service to approximately 500 passengers in that first year. This service was provided within the regular Community Transit schedule. By 1998, ridership had grown to approximately 9,000 passengers annually. Ridership has since increased even more dramatically, in 2002, SMART provided a nearly 40,000 ADA Paratransit passenger trips.
