Waiting for the Bus

Buses stop at all red SMART signs.  In Detroit city limits, most SMART buses also stop at DDOT signs – be sure to flag for the SMART bus. If you’re boarding a SMART bus in Detroit, you won’t be able to deboard until you hit the suburbs.  Also note that certain limited and express SMART buses do not pick up at every stop.

Paying your Fare

Upon boarding you can use several methods to pay your fare.

  1. Cash – drivers do not make change.  You will receive a ticket with the difference.
  2. Monthly pass
  3. Value pass

If you’re paying cash or value card and your trip involves multiple buses, now’s the time to buy a transfer.  A transfer lets you ride additional buses for three hours without paying more full fare.  You don’t need a transfer if you’re using a monthly pass.

DDOT transfers are valid on SMART buses, and SMART transfers are valid on DDOT buses.

Getting off the Bus
When the bus is about two block from your destination, pull the cord along the windows.  You’ll hear a bell and the driver will know you want to deboard at the next stop.  If you’re not familiar with the area, the driver can help you find the closest bus stop to your destination.
