SMART introduces New Dial-A-Ride Service in Farmington and Farmington Hills
Starting Monday, March 19, 2012 SMART will introduce its new Dial-A-Ride service in Farmington and Farmington Hills. The new Dial-A-Ride service will improve access to the residents connecting them to destinations within the cities of Farmington and Farmington Hills.

Farmington City Council Reverses Decision and Stays in SMART
In what has to be viewed as a dramatic turnaround, the Farmington City Council voted unanimously to opt-in to SMART and allow their residents to vote in August. This decision keeps SMART Fixed Route buses, Connector services as well as locally supported Community Transit buses rolling for the residents of Farmington. In a previous meeting held on January 17, the Farmington City Council opted-out of SMART in a 4 to 1 decision.

SMART and Its Unions Reach Concession Agreements
SMART is pleased to announce that all of its unions have now ratified new collective bargaining agreements. After months of bargaining and failing to reach concession agreements, SMART filed for Fact Finding in June 2011. In December the Fact Finder report was issued, which was accepted by SMART and its unions. The concession agreements will save approximately six million dollars annually and provide SMART with the ability to maneuver through these difficult economic times.

SMART Non-union Employee Furlough Day is Friday, January 13
As part of the wage and benefit concessions for SMART non-union employees, the first of five furlough days will occur this Friday, January 13, 2012. This only affects the administration staff and does not affect any SMART bus service. All SMART bus services will operate as scheduled Friday. SMART Customer Information and the Royal Oak Transit Center will remain open for business. However, the Transit Center located in downtown Detroit will shorten its hours from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Board Approves Service Cuts
Today, at a special SMART Board of Directors meeting, all proposed service changes were approved with the exception of Route 160 Downriver, which will remain intact and continue operating. All service changes will go into effect on December 12th, 2011.

SMART Awarded Grant Money to Enhance Services for Veterans
SMART has been awarded a grant that will fund a $127,270 project from the Veterans Transportation and Community Living Initiative, a competitive program designed to help communities make transportation services more efficient and accessible for veterans, military families, senior citizens and people with disabilities. The grant will improve access to SMART services and other available resources.

Busloads of Warmth- The Wrap Up
SMART would like to thank all the participants who brought warm and fuzzy clothing to the Busloads of Warmth charity drive on November 1st at the Oakland Mall, supporting the efforts of The Salvation Army of Metro Detroit. Partnering with SMART for a little tri-university competition were the University of Michigan (including UM-Dearborn), Michigan State University and Wayne State University.

SMART unveiled three new hybrid electric buses to its fleet, helping to serve the region responsibly and eco-consciously. Waterford Dedicates New SMART Bus
SMART and the city of Waterford celebrated the addition of a new bus to the existing fleet at the Waterford Senior Center’s Health and Housing Fair. The latest SMART bus will be used to transport senior citizens to their choice of destinations, allowing them a continued independence and quality of life. The bus dedication was attended by Mary Donnelly, customer service and transportation supervisor of the Waterford Senior Center.
