Wheelchairs are Welcome!
All SMART buses, both fixed route and small bus, are designed to accomodate wheelchairs as well as other mobility devices. Sometimes people may have to back onto the bus so they can be facing forward. Devices may have three or four wheels, but must be sized no greater than 30" x 48". The combined weight of wheelchair and occupant cannot exceed 600 pounds.
Connector and Community Transit
Passengers must be able to independently board the bus. Personal Care Attendants must pay a fare on fixed route. Personal Care Attendants on Connector or Community Transit can ride for free. Once you are on the vehicle, position yourself into one of the two spaces allocated for wheelchairs. Position your wheelchair/scooter so you face the front of the vehicle. The driver will lock you into position with the Q’Straint™ Safety system. In the case where a passenger cannot use the lap belt for medical or reasons otherwise, exceptions may be made with a passenger request at the driver's discretion.
Fixed Route Buses
SMART requires that all wheelchairs be secured to the coach using the Q’Straint™ wheelchair securement system and that the passenger be secured in the wheelchair with the lap belt. In the case where a passenger cannot use the lap belt for medical or reasons otherwise, exceptions may be made with a passenger request at the driver's discretion.
