How to Buy Passes

The best way to make SMART your everywhere connection is to use our convenient SMART Passes. There are three ways to purchase passes:

Order physical passes online at our convenient SMART Store.
Mobile passes can be purchased through the Transit mobile application.

Note: Wayne State students, faculty, and staff receiving free passes through WayneRides will need to download the standalone Token Transit application and set up an account. Follow the instructions on the WayneRides website to access your free DART passes.

SMART has two Transit Centers located in Royal Oak and downtown Detroit. SMART Transit Centers accept cash, credit and debit cards.

  • Royal Oak Transit Center (202 Sherman Drive), open Monday-Saturday
  • Downtown Detroit Transit Center (Buhl Building East Lobby, 535 Griswold Street), open Monday-Friday

Connecting to where you want to go is easy when you buy a pass. It’s a convenient and affordable way to pay. Whichever pass you choose, you’ll be connecting to destinations throughout metro Detroit in no time!


DART Regional Passes are rolling passes. They are valid from first activation and allow for unlimited travel in any direction within the time window of the pass, including reverse rides on the same bus route. Unused passes do not expire.

All DART Regional Passes are valid for travel on SMART and DDOT fixed route service, SMART Flex, northbound trips on MTA Flint's Great Lakes Crossing Regional Route, and Port Huron bound trips on Blue Water Area Transit's M29 service. Present an activated paper or mobile pass to the driver when boarding.


Regional DART passes are not valid for travel on ADA Paratransit service. For these services, use a SMART Only DART pass or pay with cash.

Four types of Regional Passes are available for purchase. Proper ID is required for reduced fares.

4 Hour Regional Pass, Full Fare ($2) and Reduced ($0.50)

A blue 4 Hour DART pass

This pass is automatically dispensed from the farebox on every bus in the form of a pre-activated transfer ticket upon cash payment. It allows for unlimited travel on SMART and DDOT within a 4-hour window.

Passes bought in advance must be activated by inserting into the farebox on first use. On subsequent uses, either insert or swipe your pass.

24 Hour Regional Pass, Full Fare ($5) and Reduced ($2)

A blue 24 Hour DART pass

This pass can be purchased on the bus in the form of a pre-activated transfer ticket. It allows for unlimited travel on SMART and DDOT within a 24-hour window. You must tell the driver you would like a day pass before inserting cash payment.

Passes bought in advance must be activated by inserting into the farebox on first use. On subsequent uses, either insert or swipe your pass.

7 Day Regional Pass, Full Fare ($22) and Reduced ($10) 

A blue 7 Day DART pass

This pass cannot be purchased on the bus. It must be bought in advance.

If you have a magstripe pass, it must be activated by inserting it into the farebox on first use. On subsequent uses, either insert or swipe your pass. These passes have a cut upper right corner.

If you have an NFC-enabled pass, simply tap the pass on the farebox to activate it and on each subsequent use. These passes do not have a cut corner and feature the NFC wireless communication symbol.

31 Day Regional Pass, Full Fare ($70) and Reduced ($29)

A blue 31 Day DART pass

This pass cannot be purchased on the bus. It must be bought in advance.

If you have a magstripe pass, it must be activated by inserting it into the farebox on first use. On subsequent uses, either insert or swipe your pass. These passes have a cut upper right corner.

If you have an NFC-enabled pass, simply tap the pass on the farebox to activate it and on each subsequent use. These passes do not have a cut corner and feature the NFC wireless communication symbol.

31 Day SMART Pass

  • Full Fare ($66): Good for travel on all SMART fixed routes, Paratransit, and Flex.
  • Reduced ($17): Good for travel on all SMART fixed routes and Flex.

Reduced-fare travelers wishing to ride Connector/ADA Paratransit with DART must purchase the $33 SMART Connector Plus Pass.

31 Day Connector Plus Pass ($33, Reduced Fare eligible riders only)

Good for travel on all SMART fixed routes, Connector/ADA Paratransit, and Flex.

ADA Paratransit travelers may use a SMART Only DART pass as partial payment.

SMART Value Passes are an excellent option for infrequent SMART riders. Unlike other DART passes, Value Passes have no time-based expiration. They instead provide a declining pay-as-you-go balance. Each time you use your Value Pass, your remaining balance will be printed on the back.

Value Passes are available in two cost-saving denominations: A $10 pass ($11 in fare value) and a $20 pass ($22 in fare value). If you are eligible for reduced fares, the appropriate fare will be deducted when using the pass. You must tell the driver if you are a reduced fare traveler before inserting your pass into the farebox. Proper ID is required for reduced fares.

Value Passes are good for travel on all SMART fixed routes. They are not valid on Flex, ADA/Paratransit Service, or DDOT routes.
