How to Use the Farebox

SMART offers a variety of ways to pay your fare, you’ll find 3 key slots on the top of the box:
  1. The Insertion Slot for the 31-Day Pass Activator, Value Pass, Transfer Cards and Change Cards.
  2. The magnetic reader for a validated SMART 31 Day Pass, monthly Regional Pass or Regional Plus Pass.
  3. The Bill Insertion Slot for $1, $5, and $10 bills.

The card insertion slot located to the left is used to activate your 31 Day Pass (after which you would swipe it through the magnetic reader slot), Value Pass, Transfer Card and Change Card. Dates will be printed on your passes, from the activation to the expiration, for your convenience. The magnetic reader slot is for validated SMART 31 Day Pass, monthly Regional Pass or Regional Plus Pass. Swipe your pass in the reader and you’ll hear a beep—it’s that easy.

The bill insertion slot is for cash. Bills should be smoothed out and inserted into the slot. $1, $5, and $10 bills are accepted. The farebox does not make change; instead you will receive a change card that can be used towards the purchase of a future ride.

Coins should be dropped in one at a time in the coin cup, located beneath the bill insertion slot. Change will be issued on a change card that can be used for future rides. The passenger display panel will keep track of how much you insert.

Remember, if you qualify for a reduced fare or need a transfer, please tell the driver before you insert any cash or passes into the farebox.

Happy riding!
