All Communities in Macomb County Benefit from SMART Services

Our Public Education Campaign regarding the November 8th SMART Public Transportation Millage proposal is currently underway. As you know, this local funding enables SMART to continue to provide and expand transit services in Macomb County.

The Macomb County Board of Commissioners approved placing the SMART five-year millage proposal on the November 8, 2022, ballot to expand SMART transportation services. The ballot measure will also contribute to the operation of local communities’ transit services that partner with SMART to share the responsibility of community transit within each city.

SMART currently operates 18 Fixed Route, Connector, and Paratransit services throughout Macomb County. SMART Flex on-demand transportation offers trips along Hall Road between Sterling Heights and New Baltimore.

The five-year, 0.95 mil proposal will expand and maintain existing public transit services, including transportation provided by SMART to offer—
•    Better coverage of current routes
•    New FAST Routes
•    Increased access to Flex on-demand service
•    Improved average wait times between 15-30 minutes on Fixed Route and Flex

Average Cost to the Taxpayer:
Every $100,000 in home value corresponds to a 50% taxable value, or $50,000.
  • In this case, the SMART 0.95 mil property tax costs a homeowner $47.50 per year or $3.96 a month for five years.
  • Also, for every $1.00 of local funding SMART leverages an additional $1.34 in federal and state dollars.
