Macomb County Millage Renewal

Tuesday, October 27, 2026/Categories: SMART News, Public Notices, Featured Homepage News

On Tuesday, November 3rd, 2026, the SMART public transportation millage renewal will be on the ballot for voters in Macomb County.

All SMART services, including fixed routes, Flex, and paratransit, will be fare-free on Election Day.

Maintains existing service

The millage funds the continued operation of fixed route buses, Flex, and Paratransit/ADA services in Macomb County. This includes FAST Gratiot, SMART's frequent limited-stop express between downtown Detroit and 23 Mile Road with over 70,000 monthly riders.

Keeps student rides free

K-12, college, and university students ride SMART fixed-route service free with presentation of valid ID. This program began in May 2026 and is made possible by county millage dollars.

Funds stop and shelter improvements

Since 2025, SMART has improved over 300 bus stops systemwide with new concrete walkways for accessible boarding, including shelters and benches at select locations in Macomb County. These amenities are made possible by millage funds and will be expanded to additional stops over the next several years.

Two photos, one labeled "how it started" and another labeled "how it's going" showing the bus stop at Gratiot and 23 Mile northbound. Before improvements, riders had to board from the grass next to the curb. Now, a shelter with a bench and real-time display has been installed along with a concrete walkway.
