Bus Stop Improvement Project: SMART SPACES
Launched in the summer of 2025, the SMART SPACES project (Safer Places, Accessible Communities, and Effective Stops) is a comprehensive improvement plan for SMART's 5,000+ bus stops across Metro Detroit.
SMART has partnered with HNTB to create an up-to-date inventory of our bus shelters and amenity locations including signage, benches, trash cans, public call phones, and real-time information displays. Accessibility for mobility device users will be audited, including concrete condition, curb access, street design, local sidewalk connectivity, and adequate wayfinding at major connection points across our system.
These findings will inform upcoming infrastructure enhancements alongside the SMARTer Mobility system redesign project. Bus stops will be added, upgraded, or removed in accordance with our new Bus Stop Design Manual to create a safe, accessible, and effective network for all of our riders.
